History - top

Fat the Water Rat was created in 1985 as a test plug in a group of 75 top water lures we had created over the winter months in Maine. The plugs were given out to friends and neighbors with our phone number to call with the results of fishing with their test lure. Everyone had good luck fishing the two bladed top water baits and several people caught trophy size small mouth bass up to six pounds! My two sons, Jay and Rod began to tell some tall tales about the ones that got away when they were fishing with Fat-Fat the Water Rat and after a little experience fishing the bait, they began to land a lot of big bass.

One lure stood out from the rest as the top producer in the testing. This particular plug had been put together exactly backwards and it fished differently than any of the other baits. The plug had a fish feeding slurp, darted back and forth at the slightest line twitch, and the fish enticing bulge it made was awesome! The plug cast farther with less effort because its heavy end was in the back.

After fifteen years of fishing, the original plug has worn out six sets of hooks, a dozen or more propellers and a lot of fishing line. I personally have caught more than 500 small mouth bass of three pounds and over. There have been scores of pickerel, white perch, largemouth bass, white bass, salt water fish, pike, musky, and even an Atlantic salmon or two that got greedy and thought Fat-Fat was a good lunch.

Current Model - top

The current model of Fat-Fat the Water Rat is an exact copy of the original lure and is being handmade in a limited production of 1000 lures. Each lure is an extraordinary addition to anyone’s fishing arsenal or lure collection.

Fat-Fat the Water Rat has gold plated, counter rotating propellers on front and back to keep the lure from spinning on retrieve. Always make sure both props are free from weeds and debris and turn freely in the water.

Fat-Fat the Water Rat has oversize hooks and split rings that combine to make more surface noise and keep the hooks swinging when a fish tries to shake the hooks loose. The special cedar wood body is waterproofed all the way through and resonates the lure’s sound to make this the Stradivarius of fishing lures.

Fishing Tips - top

  • When fishing next to cover, cast as tight to stumps and grass beds as possible.

  • As soon as Fat-Fat the Water Rat touches down, give a sharp twitch to make the props spin and produce a slurping fish sound. This initial touchdown will often produce the strike of a lifetime, so be prepared to set the hooks when you feel the fish on the line.

  • A person who strikes a little slow on surface bait will always hook more fish than someone who is overly aggressive on the strike and tries to set the hook fast.

  • Fat-Fat the Water Rat is very effective just sitting still near cover. Water and wind movements make the props move and the hooks rattle lightly at the slightest retrieve of the line.

  • Twitch the lure on retrieve and Fat-Fat the Water Rat will sputter and Walk the Dog all the way back to the boat.

  • Never leave Fat-Fat the Water Rat alone on a slack line while you have a break, unless you want to lose you rod and reel. Big fish like to hit a sitting lure and Fat-Fat the Water Rat -is a perfect target with its colorful paint and gold props.

Fishing Reminders - top

Remember, to wear your hat and glasses when fishing with any lure. They will save your eyes and scalp when your fishing Buddy gets excited or the Big One strikes and throws the lure back into the boat.
